Attention Analytics - Bridging Brain And Business

The question about which  parts of your website draw the most attention is as old as web analytics. The industry has done mouse tracking, visitor tracking, eyetracking...but never really looked at attention prediction studies done by neuro scientists.EyeQuant is one of these new solutions right out of the laboratories of the University of Osnabrueck, Germany. EyeQant ist based on a neuroscientific attention models. These models calculate within a few seconds which parts of the Design draw the most attention. The results are stunning and are close to what Eye tracking studies can achieve, but at a fraction of the costs.

Here one of the interesting results"

Youtube Analytics

Already a few days ago, but still note worthy: "Today we're releasing YouTube Insight, a free tool that enables anyone with a YouTube account to view detailed statistics about the videos that they upload to the site. For example, uploaders can see how often their videos are viewed in different geographic regions, as well as how popular they are relative to all videos in that market over a given period of time. You can also delve deeper into the lifecycle of your videos, like how long it takes for a video to become popular, and what happens to video views as popularity peaks."

Good move by Google. It would be nice if Youtube Analytics could be integrated within the Google Adwords and/or Analytics solution.  Especially now that universal marketing is everything.

Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco

Various printers now at Pricegrabber.com

Great news: I will be attending Web 2.0 Expo in April in San Francisco. I was always be a big fan of O'reilly books, but never was able to attend the conference, even that I had a press pass to the Web 2.0 Expo in Berlin.

I am also a big fan of Pubcon, but since these conferences prefer the same speakers year over year....I am glad to visit (for me new) conferences like the Web 2.o Expo.

Anyways...if you want to meet up, grab a German beer or just grab lunch, feel free to get in touch with me.

Otherwise...if you are located in Europe, I am still planning to visit the GSM Mobile in Barcelona Febr. 10-12th.

Reinvigorate launched in closed beta

There has been some buzz about a new web analytics tool called Reinvigorate. Bloggers named it "the best hosted solution" or posted "everything I wished Google Analytics to be". Like many others I am still in the loop of getting an invitation, so I haven't seen much, but what I have googled and seen on the screenshots below, showed me, that there is not a feature which I haven't seen before. Their UI and dashboards looks pretty good. Still I don't want to write about a product, which I haven't tested yet.

Tapefailure will change web analytics with it's "Most Average Tape" feature.

When Tapefailure launched in closed beta, I was a little bit annoyed, b/c I wasn't able to get a beta account. Luckily the founders acted quickly and let me sneak a peak. Today they finally launched officially and it seems, that they came out with a big surprise: player_minishot.jpg

The "Most average tape" feature let's you find out what the most common actions taken are. This means you basically can follow the average user and see how he/she surfs your site. It's not that you could not get this data before, but it would take a major effort to visualize it in a way that tapefailure does.

Tapefailure also allows you to view only the "top five" of the most average tapes, instead of all of them. Great idea and congrats for this great innovation. I will test it out  and post the results some time later.

Chatstat - moving graph technology™

chastat Chatstat web analytics adds a new edge to web analytics.

Hitgeist - a business development / link development goldmine

Hitgeist Hitgeist - re-launched its service (former Alexaradar) under a different name after Alexaholic got in trouble with Alexa.

Hitgeist ratings are calculated by decoding the Alexa 5-year traffic charts averaged over three months, as well as analyzing information provided by Alexa URlInfo.
The Fast traffic is effected by:

  • Sliding 3-month average of a daily reach over 5-year period
  • Current 3-month reach average
  • Source countries of website's audience
  • Date of launch. Newcomers have more weight if their daily reach is comparable to other websites in selected country
  • Shape of a daily reach curve

Hitgeist is programmed by top developer Viktors Rotanovs and looks like a great tool for business and/or link development. With Hitwise you are able find relatively new and successful websites within seconds. You are even able to sort by countries, cities and subdomains. An absolute goldmine for online marketers & SEOs.

Forget Twitter! Watch what your neighbor is watching

Attention TV Atten.tv - Watch what people are watching. Bigbrother for everybody.

"As you spend more time online, your clickstream increasingly represents who you are and what you are interested in. AttenTV turns one person’s or group’s clickstream data into another person’s entertainment."

Just remember the time when AOL released the search logs of some of its users and how much attention it drew and you can imagine what impact Atten.tv might have in the future.

Voyerism for the more and more ego-centric online crowd is just great! Users will love it. Marketers as well.

Tapefailure beta vs. Clicktale beta

Tapefailure Tapefailure launched in private beta last week, but doesn't allow me and many others to test it.

Tapefailure lets you record your users' browsing sessions and play them back, just like a tape, as well as view numerous useful statistics about your users. Tapes can be viewed online, or downloaded for later viewing. Statistics include percentage of page scrolled, distance the mouse has been moved, average number of clicks per page, user sight focus, general paths, and numerous others.

Tapefailure could be pretty good and is pretty similar to Clicktale, which records users movements as well.

But unfortunately they did not let me take a look. Soguess for which service I am voting for.

Update: Just got an email from the founder of Tapefailure. They are actually still working on the product, which is the reason why the beta is still closed for only a small amount of users.

Metriserve and it’s cool desktop gadget

Metriserve Metriserve - solid webanalytics with a cool Vista/Mac OsX gadget!

Metriserve is a pretty cool tool, cheap (starting at $9/month) and because of it's "visitor approach"

it reminds me of Etracker, one of Europe's leading webanalytics vendors. Reports are calculated

in real-time based on the latest web metrics collected from your visitors. All statistical information

is current up to the second.

What I especially like about this solution, is it's Windows Vista and Mac OS X gadget /

widget Service. The gadget shows you how your web site(s) are doing today right on your desktop.

Metriserve widget

I would like to see this gadget as a browser plugin for Firefox and IE. How often

were you asked what the numbers are for today and you had to login into you

webanalytics solution, while a simple Visits number would have helped you out.

Well done Metriserve!

Improve your Alexa ranking without the toolbar / booster service

A friend just forwarded me this script and I am not sure if it is working, but if it does....good luck to Alexa. function sendPost($host,$path,$data) { $method = 'POST'; $fp = fsockopen($host, 80); fputs($fp, "$method $path HTTP/1.1\r\n"); fputs($fp, "Host: $host\r\n"); fputs($fp,"Content-type: application/x-www-form- urlencoded\r\n"); fputs($fp, "Content-length: " . strlen($data) . "\r\n"); fputs($fp, "Connection: close\r\n\r\n"); fputs($fp, "Cookie: A9ToolbarRunning=1; A9ToolbarVersion=; A9ToolbarClientID=2; A9ToolbarSource=A9 \r\n"); while (!feof($fp)) { $sent .= fgets($fp,128); } fclose($fp); return $sent; } $stringa = "" $sent = sendPost("siteinfo.a9.com","/data/=?cli=10&dat=nsa&pane=amzn&ver=a9-1.5&url=

Getclicky out of beta into the wild

Getclicky webanalytics Getclicky goes live and it is the first time that I write about it. So here some first quick info!

Clicky Web Analytics 2.0 gives bloggers and smaller web sites a more personal understanding of their visitors. Many analyzers give good summaries, and Clicky is no different - but the similarities stop there. Clicky stands out with its refreshinglysimple interface, innovative features like Spy and RSS feeds. Getclicky Spy is a feature that users have raved about, providing you with a live view of visitors interacting with your web site. A Google Maps mashup shows you where your visitors are located, but goes one step further than other solutions by linking each visitor on the map to the activity report for that particular visit.

As written before I haven't covered Getclicky so far, but will get into details later this month. I personally like it a lot, especially some of the mashups for small webmasters look great. I also believe Getclicky's pricing model is a good approach. There is no need to keep the entire product free. I believe that a small fee which pays for service and constant innnovation is usually better than completetly free tools. Good job Getclicky!

Visitorlogs Visitorlogs - looks good, but sign up is broken.

I am not sure if it is only me, but another tool that used to be working end of last summer is down:

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0400'

Expected statement

/NewSiteUser.asp, line 3

Option Explicit

Visitorlogs features weren't bad at all, but maybe they are another Google analytics casualty or just the disinclination to invest in the highly competitive free webanalytics market.

Update: Never mind! I haven't checked the error message immediately, but now I did it. Firefox issue during sign up. That's it. With IE it works well. But seriously....it's 2007. People use Firefox as well. I won't bother now. The tool looks good, basic reports, campaign tracking, conversion tracking....not much to add.
